MEXICO CITY — The death toll from a late-July explosion at Ternium Mexico SA de CV’s plant in northern Mexico has now risen to 11, the company has confirmed.

At least two other people remain hospitalized, the company added.

Ternium Mexico was fined 647,600 pesos ($51,029) following the accident at its Guerrero steelmaking plant in San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León state, and the San Nicolás municipality ordered the company to comply with 10 security measures within 30 days.

The accident occurred during routine maintenance work at the direct-reduced iron intake of an electric-arc furnace at the plant (amm.com, July 23). An investigation into the cause of the accident continues.

The company didn’t responded to several requests for comment.
