MEXICO CITY — Altos Hornos de Mexico SA de CV (Ahmsa) set monthly records for crude steel and pig iron production in August.

Crude steel production at its No. 2 basic oxygen furnace reached 315,835 tonnes during the month, up 0.5 percent from 314,220 tonnes in July, Mexico’s largest integrated steelmaker said.

Pig iron output at Ahmsa’s No. 5 blast furnace also set a monthly record of 210,986 tonnes, up slightly from 210,916 tonnes produced during the previous month.

The increase came after the Fénix expansion project started operations in July.

The project comprises a 1.46-million-tonne-per-year blast furnace, a 1.2-million-tonne-per-year electric-arc furnace, a 1.2-million-tonne-per-year slab caster and a 1-million-tonne-per-year plate mill, at a total cost of $1.5 billion.

Ahmsa’s annual crude steel production will rise to 4.75 million tonnes from 3.5 million tonnes.
