ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 5.8 million tonnes in
August, down 10 percent from the previous month and 9 percent
from the same month last year, according to the Lake Carriers
Shipments from U.S.
ports totaled 5.1 million tons last month, down 6 percent from
a year earlier. The August total included 447,000 tons shipped
to Quebec City for loading into oceangoing vessels, putting the
year-to-date export total at 1.99 million tons.
Canadian ports totaled 728,000 tons in August, down 24 percent
from a year ago.
Great Lakes iron ore trade has totaled 35.4 million tons so
far this year, down 8 percent from the first eight months of
last year, the association said.
