US steel mill shipments rise in July

NEW YORK — U.S. steel mills shipped nearly 8.3 million net tons in July, up 6 percent from almost 7.8 million tons the previous month and 4.6 percent higher than 7.9 million tons in July last year, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.

Major product changes in July vs. the previous month included cold-rolled sheet (up 9 percent), hot-rolled sheet (up 7 percent) and hot-dipped galvanized sheet and strip (up 1 percent).

Year-to-date shipments of 55.7 million tons were down 4.1 percent from 58 million tons in the first seven months of last year.
