PITTSBURGH Upstate Shredding LLC-Ben Weitsman & Son Inc. has entered a deal to buy Hornell Waste Material Co., Hornell, N.Y.
The terms of the deal, which is expected to close in 30 days, were not disclosed.
"We were already selling our shredder feed (to Upstate Shredding) and this is a really good opportunity to grow the business and get twice as big as we are," Hornell president Danny Spitulnik said.
The location was the motivating factor for the purchase, Adam Weitsman, owner of Owego, N.Y.-based Upstate Shredding, said. "We do not yet have a location in Steuben County, so this acquisition is filling a great need to serve Hornell and the surrounding areas," he added.
"With our new export facility at the Port of Albany in full operation and our second shredder approved for New Castle, we are eager to find new markets for scrap metal," Weitsman added.
The four-acre scrapyard has been in existence for more than a century. Aside from buying ferrous and nonferrous material, Hornell Waste bales, shears and crushes cars, Spitulnik said.
Weitsman plans to renovate and upgrade the facility, he said.
The acquisition follows Upstate Shreddings recent purchases of Valley Recycling LLC in Allegany and Reamer Recycling Services Inc. in Ithaca, both in New York (amm.com, July 9).
