Nucor’s Kankakee mill schedules outage

NEW YORK — Nucor Corp.’s rolling mill and melt shop in Kankakee, Ill., will be shut down for maintenance from Sept. 21 through Oct. 1, and won’t ship many sizes of rebar from the facility for much of that period, according to a letter to customers dated Sept. 17.

The mill will also conduct maintenance on its shipping cranes. Various grades and lengths of rebar from sizes No. 3 to No. 11 won’t be available between Sept. 21 and Sept. 26.

"Is it going to disrupt things? Yes, it will. That’s why we’ve had to stock stuff for the past three weeks," one Kankakee customer said.

Another customer’s company said it was buying material from other sources during the interim, including Charlotte, N.C.-based Nucor’s other locations and Gerdau Long Steel North America’s depots in the region.

Kankakee’s outage was included on a rolling schedule sent to customers in August. The mill produces rebar and merchant bar quality rounds, flats and angles. It has an annual capacity of 800,000 tons.

The steelmaker also said in the letter that one of the cranes in its merchant bar warehouse will be down, which could also lead to delays.

Nucor declined to comment.
