CHICAGO North Americas rail shipments of metallic ores and metals totaled 49,548 carloads in the week ended Sept. 14, up 8.8 percent from the same week last year, but the year-to-date total of more than 1.67 million carloads was down 2.1 percent from a year earlier, according to the latest Association of American Railroads (AAR) data.
U.S. shipments of metallic ores and metals totaled 26,722 carloads in the most recent week, up 7.5 percent from a year earlier, but the year-to-date total of 912,464 carloads was down 4.6 percent.
North American shipments of 28,180 carloads of motor vehicles and parts jumped 13.1 percent in the weekly comparison, and the year-to-date total was 2.1 percent higher. U.S. shipments totaled 17,942 carloads in the most recent week, up 14.4 percent from a year earlier, and the year-to-date total of 591,147 carloads was 3.8 percent higher.
North American railroads reported a cumulative volume of 13.81 million carloads for the first 37 weeks of 2013, down 0.1 percent from the same point last year, while the U.S. cumulative total of nearly 10.36 million carloads was 1 percent lower.
