Severstal NA’s lightweighting technologies gain ground

CHICAGO — Severstal North America LLC is helping its automotive customers achieve stronger, lighter weight vehicles by using computer-aided engineering technologies, proven manufacturing techniques and new grades of high-strength and high-formability steel, it said.

The Dearborn, Mich.-based company has obtained weight reductions of up to 42 percent while improving or maintaining performance of the installed steel part, Jon Powers, Severstal’s manager of advanced engineering and product applications, said in a statement Oct. 3.

Severstal engineers use optimization techniques to meet customers’ design goals.

A recent 3G optimization effort resulted in an full vehicle weight reduction of 7.3 percent while improving roof roll-over crash performance and maintaining other stiffness design targets, the steelmaker said.
