SÃO PAULO — Chilean copper producer Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco) and French train manufacturer Alstom SA will partner to install copper handrails in Chilean trains, according to Codelco.

"The initiative aims to have the train as a pilot experience in order to implement [copper handrails] in other similar trains in Chile and stimulate new uses for copper," Codelco said in a statement.

Alstom is taking part in a tender process for two new subway lines in the Chilean capital of Santiago.

"We are convinced that applying copper in surfaces of greater contact among people will mean a big change in the standards of public transportation," Hernán de Solminihac, Chile’s mining minister, said in a statement.
