US steel mill shipments log gain

NEW YORK — U.S. steel mills shipped more than 8.34 million net tons in August, up 0.8 percent from the previous month, American Iron and Steel Institute data show.

However, the August total is 0.4 percent below the 8.38 million tons shipped in the same month last year.

U.S. mills shipped 64.02 million tons in the first eight months of the year, down 3.6 percent from 66.4 million tons in the same 2012 period.

Shipments of hot-dipped galvanized sheet and strip jumped 6 percent vs. July, those of cold-rolled sheet rose 2 percent and hot-rolled sheet fell 2 percent.
