NEW YORK — Members of the United Steelworkers union at Mountain State Carbon LLC have overwhelmingly rejected a new labor agreement.

Union members voted 181-7 against the deal at the Follansbee, W.Va.-based cokemaking joint venture between now-defunct RG Steel LLC and Severstal North America Inc., with more than 80 percent of the membership voting, according to USW district representative Santo Santoro.

Despite the margin of the vote, Santoro said the union was eager to resume negotiations.

"We want to reach an agreement that’s helpful to the company and helpful to our people. The coke plant is our life down here," he said.

"We respect the decision of our employees, and we remain available for further discussion," a Severstal spokeswoman told AMM in an e-mail.
