NEW YORK — IT-TRI LLC, an affiliate of Independence Tube Corp., will invest $68 million to build a tubing and pipe manufacturing plant in Lawrence County, Ala., which market sources said will likely focus on the pipe market.

"Their intention with the new facility is for a pressure (pipe) product. They will probably start with A53 pipe," a Midwest distributor said, adding that Chicago-based Independence Tube might look to make energy tubulars at the facility.

The company didn’t respond to requests for comment.

IT-TRI expects to break ground this fall and begin operations by the end of 2014, Rick Werner, president of both IT-TRI and Independence Tube, said.

"Having two raw material suppliers in Alabama, Nucor (Corp.) in Decatur and U.S. Steel (Corp.) in Birmingham, and due to the growing Southern demand for pipe, the company began looking at sites in the southeast United States for this new plant," Werner said in a statement.

The company expects to create 100 jobs before 2016.
