MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s crude steel production totaled 8.82 million tonnes for the first half, down 1.2 percent year on year, according to figures released Oct. 23 by national steel association Canacero.

Mexico’s output for June was 1.34 million tonnes, "the lowest level in the past 30 months," Canacero said.

Considering the results, the association said Mexican steel output has decreased about 2.03 percent per month from January to June.

First-half consumption of finished steel products fell 10.8 percent year on year to 10.68 million tonnes.

However, imports of steel products dropped 18.8 percent year on year to 4.2 million tonnes in the first half, it said.

Meanwhile, exports rose 17.1 percent to 2.96 million tonnes in the same comparison, leaving Mexico with a trade deficit of 1.24 million tonnes in the first half of the year.
