SHANGHAI — BHP Billiton Ltd.’s manganese ore production fell in the third quarter due to a planned shutdown at its Hotazel plant in South Africa and lower recoveries at its Gemco plant in Australia.

Manganese ore output totaled 2.05 million tonnes in the three months ended Sept. 30, down 9 percent from the preceding quarter and 5 percent lower than a year earlier, the London-based company said.

Manganese alloy output of 137,000 tonnes was down 25 percent from the second quarter due to planned maintenance at its Metalloys plant in South Africa and Australia’s Temco plant, but was up 5 percent from a year ago.
