NEW YORK — Joseph Carrabba, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., has been awarded the American Iron and Steel Institute’s Gary Memorial Medal.

The award, named for AISI’s first president Judge Elbert H. Gary, was established in 1927 to recognize individuals who make "remarkable lifelong contributions to the North American steel industry," the Washington-based group said Nov. 7.

Carrabba joined Cleveland-based Cliffs in 2005 as president and chief operating officer, became president and chief executive officer in 2006 and was elected chairman in 2007.

Prior to joining Cliffs, Carrabba worked for 22 years at London-based Rio Tinto Plc. He served AISI as chairman from May 2012 to May 2013 and holds positions at the National Mining Association, Newmont Mining Corp., KeyCorp, Capital University’s board of trustees and the Frostburg University Foundation.
