Raw steel output sags to over 13-month low

NEW YORK — U.S. raw steel output totaled an estimated 1,733,000 net tons in the week ended Dec. 21, down 4.7 percent from 1,818,000 tons the previous week, as mills operated at an average capability utilization rate of 72.3 percent.

This is the lowest level seen since Nov. 3, 2012, when production totaled 1,707,000 tons at an average capability utilization rate of 69.1 percent.

In the corresponding week last year, mills produced 1,785,000 tons at an average capability utilization rate of 71.7 percent, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute, Washington.

Mills have produced 94,085,000 tons so far this year at an average capability utilization rate of 77.0 percent, down 1.4 percent from 95,464,000 tons at an average capability utilization rate of 75.2 percent in the same period last year.
