LOS ANGELES — USS-Posco Industries Inc. (UPI) has "no imminent plans to lay off any employees at present" despite a recent Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act filing, a company spokesman told AMM Jan. 3.

The Pittsburg, Calif.-based flat-rolled producer’s WARN notices, copies of which were sent to each of its 690 employees, are filed on a "periodic basis" due to the general "uncertainty" in the steel business, according to the spokesman, describing the notices as more of a "renewal to keep employees up to date."

A local United Steelworkers union official, which represents UPI’s hourly workers, couldn’t be reached for comment.

UPI, a joint venture of U.S. Steel Corp., Pittsburgh, and South Korea’s Posco Ltd., is considered one of the West Coast’s two major flat-rolled producers, along with California Steel Industries Inc., Fontana, Calif.
