MEXICO CITY — Altos Hornos de Mexico SA de CV (Ahmsa), Mexico’s biggest integrated steelmaker, has signed an agreement with local company Metaloides SA de CV to build a pig iron desulfurization plant.

The facility will feed Ahmsa’s Fénix steel expansion project, which was commissioned in July (amm.com, July 19), the steelmaker said Feb. 18.

The $2-million facility will come on-stream by year-end.

Construction of the new plant, which will be adjacent to the No. 1 basic oxygen furnace, will start by the end this month, Ahmsa said.

The company logged record crude steel output of 4.15 million tonnes in 2013, producing slab, plate, hot-rolled coil, cold-rolled coil and tinplate, as well as heavy sections and beams.
