PITTSBURGH — A fire at Pacific Steel & Recycling’s scrapyard in Missoula, Mont., caused more than $50,000 in damage.

All employees had safely evacuated by the time the Missoula Fire Department arrived. The fire department said the building was filled with smoke from a forklift that was engulfed in flames, but the blaze was extinguished before the propane tank on the forklift exploded.

The fire department credited the recycler’s early detection program as one reason the flames were quickly brought under control.

The Great Falls, Mont.-based recycler could not be reached for comment.
