NEW YORK — Water infrastructure legislation supported by the steel industry was signed into law by President Barack Obama June 10.

The American Iron and Steel Institute had lobbied for the Water Resources Reform and Development Act for months, arguing that the bill will ease transport of iron and steel through the nation’s waterways (amm.com, May 21).

The new law authorizes 34 stalled projects aimed at improving waterway locks and dams, and also will fund seaport dredging.

The bill’s passage also clears the way for the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to tackle legislation improving the nation’s highways and bridges, which AISI president and chief executive officer Thomas J. Gibson has said is another priority for the steel industry (amm.com, May 14).
