NEW YORK — The U.S. Commerce Department will hire its first-ever chief data officer, but AMM has been told that no changes are in the works for metals-related data.

Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker announced new data initiatives July 14 at a San Diego technology conference, including a data advisory council and an effort to allow software developers to organize trade and export data.

There are no plans yet to change data centered on materials or Commerce’s Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) system, which tracks steel product imports, a Commerce spokesman told AMM via e-mail.
