Severstal Columbus to pay $135,000 penalty

CHICAGO — Severstal North America Inc. has agreed to pay a $135,000 penalty to settle alleged operating permit violations at its electric-arc furnace operation in Columbus, Miss., according to Mississippi Commission on Environmental Quality documents.

A spokesman for Dearborn, Mich.-based Severstal NA did not respond to a request for comment.

Severstal Columbus has an annual capacity of 3.4 million tons of hot-rolled steel, 1.5 million tons of cold-rolled steel and 1.1 million tons of galvanized and galvannealed sheet, according to the company’s website.
