PITTSBURGH A metal recycler in Grand Rapids, Mich., will have to wait another month to learn if it will be permitted to move its operations to a larger location.
West Side Iron & Metal Inc. was granted a special land use permit from the Grand Rapids Planning Commission for a portion of the new site in March. However, a neighboring food processing company is asking for the permit to be rescinded because it does not want a recycler in the vicinity, according to a city planner.
The matter is scheduled to go before the planning commission again on Sept. 18 The commission will review the case to determine if it met all standards when it made the decision, and if it did the decision will be upheld.
The larger space includes a 20,000-square-foot building and better access to the highway than West Side Iron & Metals current location, where it has operated for 30 years, according to city documents. The move will create as many as 10 jobs over the next decade.
The company buys from industrial and peddler accounts but does not accept vehicles. It sells material to a larger metal recycler.
