Ford grows aluminium-intensive SUV output

Ford Motor Co is investing $25 million in its assembly plant in the US state of Kentucky to meet surging customer demand for its aluminium-intensive sport utility vehicle (SUV) models, a Ford spokeswoman confirmed to American Metal Market. It brings Ford’s total funding for the plant to $925 million.

More than 400 new robots – including collaborative robots – have been added to the facility, mainly in the body shop. The plant also added a robot lab, where employees can test out software tweaks or troubleshoot issues away from the factory floor.

“The response from customers regarding our new full-size SUVs has been exceptional,” said Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford Global Operations. “Using a combination of Ford’s advanced manufacturing and American hard work and ingenuity, we’ll deliver more high-quality Lincoln Navigators and Ford Expeditions to customers than originally planned.”
