Over 500 executives from 42 countries from around the globe gathered late September in Abu Dhabi for Metal Bulletin Events’ 29th International Aluminium Conference. While the region's 5m tpy of primary smelter capacity and the field trip to the Emal smelter with its new Phase 2 potline were a major draw, there was also much to talk about on the market front. Aluminium has heated up over the year, and key talking points at the conference ranged from the need to find new bauxite sources to meet growing aluminium demand - especially in the wake of the Indonesian ban, new refinery capacity in the UAE (EGA will be developing a 2m tpy refinery by Dec 2017 rising eventually to 4m tpy), the ongoing issue of high market premiums, and the potential for strong consumption increases in the automotive sheet arena. Delegates are already marking in their diaries the date and venue for next year's conference - Vancouver Sept 21-23 2015.
