Trial nears on ‘false steel test’ charges

Jury selection is under way for the trial of Testwell Laboratories Inc., Ossining, N.Y., and company employees accused of falsifying test results for concrete and structural steel used in several high-visibility building projects in New York City.

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office in October last year released a multiple-count grand jury indictment against Testwell, its president, vice president, engineers and a project manager. This week, the complaint was reduced to 50 counts, all roughly related to "schemes to defraud," a spokeswoman at the prosecutor's office told AMM. The original indictment contained 93 counts against Testwell's president alone.

Jury selection is expected to continue through Thanksgiving week, with the trial beginning shortly after the holiday, the spokeswoman said.
