2017 Scrap Equipment Provider of the Year Finalists

Metso Minerals Industries, Inc.

Metso offers one of the most comprehensive metal recycling product lines in the industry. Through acquisitions of the Lindemann ™ and Texas Shredder ™ along with other established brands such as Hammermills ™ and Svedala ™, Metso offers a full range of pre-shredders, automobile shredders, shears, balers and briquetters and can customize solutions to the specific needs of ferrous and nonferrous metals recyclers. Scrap shredders range in throughput from the ability to process 15- to 20-tons per hour to more than 300 tons per hour of dense, high-quality ferrous shred.

The Lindemann product line offers high production rates and operational efficiency. In response to the cost-efficiency needs of small to midsize processors, Metso introduced the N-Series product line in 2016. The N-series products include the NIS Inclined Shear (660, 880, 1100 and 1375 tons), the NCS Shear/Baler/Logger Series (660, 800 and 1100 tons), the NTB Triple Ram Baler, the NLB lid baler and the NSP Briquetter Series with several new products to be released this year. All of the N-Series Products are sold, warranted and serviced by Metso’s worldwide network.

Metso offers its customers comprehensive technical and inspection services. With more than 100 years of experience, the firm cites its dedication to quality and comprehensive solutions supported by components manufactured in company-owned foundries for tight quality control. Metso distribution centers in South Carolina and abroad in Holland maintain an inventory of critical parts to minimize customers’ downtime. Equipment performance is supported by a global team of field service technicians.

Its equipment also embodies many environmental controls and energy-saving technologies to ensure responsible and cost-effective performance while minimizing wear and tear on the machinery.

Metso Minerals Industries, San Antonio, Tex., is owned by Metso Corporation, Helsinki, Finland.

Wendt Corporation

After four decades since its founding in 1977 by Thomas A. Wendt Sr., Wendt Corporation, Buffalo, N.Y., remains independently owned and continues to operate as a family business. The company provides shredding systems designed to enhance the profits of ferrous scrap companies through efficient shredding that maximizes metal recovery and the value of the recovered metals.

Facing the cyclicality of the scrap industry head-on, Wendt has maintained sales stability and increased market share during a down market as a manufacturer of shredders and nonferrous separation equipment. Since becoming a shredder manufacturer in 1998, Wendt has built 34 shredders, with 18 of the units sold in the last six years.

Fifteen of the shredders employ the firm’s innovative modular M6090 shredder. In addition, a Wendt Model 106 Heavy shredder was installed in 2016, marking the first mega-shredder project built from scratch by any shredder manufacturer in North America in several years.

To cut energy consumption, Wendt shredders have optimized shredding box chambers using DC motors that maximize tons produced per kilowatt hour while also reducing power demand surges on the grid. For possible reduction of air and noise pollution, Wendt offers the Intelligent Water Injection system, a computer-controlled package that traps airborne particles through the use of steam that can be cleansed in the separation system. In addition, innovative shredding enclosures reduce shredder noise.

Wendt equipment is supported by a technology center tasked with enhancing the efficiency of existing processes along with developing new product and processes. Equipment is supported around the clock with parts and service.

Wendt recently expanded its focus to include Mexico and South America, and in January 2017 commissioned a Wendt modular M6090 shredder in Monterrey, Mexico, the first modular auto shredder installed in that country.
