2017 Raw Material and Consumables Provider of the Year Finalists
In June 2015, Gerdau broke ground and began construction of a new, state-of-the-art nonferrous scrap separation system in Jackson, Tenn. The $20-million capital improvement project was completed in May 2016, expanding the companys capabilities to salvage both ferrous and nonferrous metals that would otherwise be sent to landfills.
The new technology uses air aspiration and magnetic sensors as opposed to water in the nonferrous separation process, making it a cleaner and more environmentally friendly way to extract nonferrous metals. The initial goal was to recover 30-million pounds, nearly double the amount of nonferrous materials removed by the prior system. However, the system has removed more ferrous products than anticipated; on average the system is recovering two-percent more usable ferrous metals, allowing the mill to reduce the amount of material going to the landfill.
HarbisonWalker International (HWI) continues to demonstrate its commitment to customers with year-over-year investments in its facilities.
Recent investments include new forming equipment, and refractory machining and cutting equipment. Citing monolithics as a growth area, HWI also announced in February 2017 that it is investing $30 million to build a technologically advanced monolithics plant as the next step in its strategy to continuously improve performance and respond to customers needs. The new facility will be one of the most technologically advanced refractories plants built in the United States and is scheduled to be operational by early 2018.
In 2016, HWI introduced a new, rapid technology advancement program to give greater voice to customers in the development of new products, services and solutions. While the company has always worked with customers to develop solutions, the new effort involves the participation of application and product specialists to create truly customer-centric solutions. Based in Pittsburgh, HWI is the largest supplier of refractory products and services in the United States.
