North Star BlueScope plans to install a new meltshop at its facility in Delta, Ohio, and to commission it by the end of 2021 Fastmarkets understands.

The new facility will feature a single-bucket charge, 195-ton electric-arc furnace (EAF), to be built by Danieli Group, the Italian mill and equipment supplier announced on Friday February 14.

“Because this is a single-charging furnace, it will save energy and promote melting efficiency,” a Danieli representative told Fastmarkets.

The facility will have two ladle metallurgy furnaces and a fume treatment plant with fume quenching technology, and the EAF will be equipped with a pressurized water-cooled roof and panels.

The new EAF is part of BlueScope's $700-million expansion of its facility in Ohio.

Fastmarkets’ daily steel hot-rolled coil index, fob mill US was calculated at $28.75 per cwt ($575 per ton) on Friday, down by 3% from $29.64 per cwt a week earlier on February 7.
