Following market feedback and unprecedented market volatility during the Covid-19 pandemic, Fastmarkets will assess its Canadian and US copper and aluminium city scrap prices twice monthly beginning in mid-May.

The second assessment will capture more price movement as a result of terminal market changes on Comex and the London Metal Exchange. In addition to source input, Fastmarkets will also take into account movements in exchange prices as well as its weekly consumer prices for aluminium and copper scrap.

The affected prices include:

Copper scrap:

  • No1 heavy copper and wire
  • No2 heavy copper and wire
  • Light copper
  • Red brass solids
  • Red brass turnings, borings
  • Yellow brass solids
  • Mixed yellow brass turnings, borings
  • 70-30 brass clips
  • Auto radiators (unsweated)
Aluminium scrap:
  • Segregated low-copper alloy clips
  • Mixed low-copper alloy clips
  • Mixed clips
  • Aluminium borings, turnings, clean and dry
  • Old aluminium, sheet and cast
  • Used beverage cans, clean and dry
  • Industrial castings
  • 63S aluminium solids
  • Painted aluminium siding
  • Litho sheets
The revised methodologies are as follows, with changes highlighted in bold:

Quality: Grade specifications
Location: US/Canada, specified city, delivered to yard
Unit: US cents per lb (Canadian cities prices are in local currency)
Publication: Twice monthly, 1st and 15th, or following business day

Lead and zinc:
Fastmarkets’ lead and zinc dealer buying prices will be unaffected by these changes and continue to be assessed on the 1st of every month, or the following business day.

Fastmarkets’ original 30-day consultation notice proposing the change in assessment frequency was published on April 1, 2020. This proposal follows the recent changes to Fastmarkets' non-ferrous city scrap price methodologies
