Four years ago, AMM decided to start a tradition and present awards for excellence in achievement in a variety of areas to steelmakers and those along the steel supply chain. Two years ago, we added a Steel Hall of Fame to recognize significant contributions from past and present individuals.

These honors have become among the most prestigious in the metals industry, and at the annual Steel Success Strategies conference in June we will announce the winners of the fifth annual Awards for Steel Excellence as well as induct the next group of honorees into our Steel Hall of Fame (see page 54).

The awards recognize best-in-class organizations in steel and related industries. This year, a total of 39 nominees are being honored as finalists in 14 distinct categories spanning the steel supply chain. The winner of a 15th category—Industry Ambassador/Advocate of the Year—also will be announced at the conference.

As in past years, we received many outstanding nominations. This year, we will hand out awards in the following categories:

• Best Innovation: Process

• Best Innovation: Product

• Best Mergers & Acquisitions

• Best Operational Improvements

• Technology Provider of the Year

• Financial Services Company of the Year

• Information Technology Company of the Year

• Environmental Responsibility/Stewardship

• Logistics Provider of the Year

• Industry Ambassador/Advocate of the Year

• Scrap Company of the Year: Small/Midsize

• Scrap Company of the Year: Large

• Service Center of the Year: Small/Midsize

• Service Center of the Year: Large

• Steel Producer of the Year

A panel of independent industry experts reviewed the large number of nominations before we ended up with 48 finalists (some companies are finalists in multiple categories) in the 14 categories (coverage starts on page 20). The next step is for a panel of distinguished judges to choose the winner in each category before we announce the final results June 17 at a dinner during Steel Success Strategies XXIX in New York.

The Steel Success Strategies conference will once again deliver viewpoints from key steel industry figures from around the world.
