Nucor eyes Florida for second rebar micro-mill

Nucor could potentially locate a $227.5 million rebar micro-mill in Florida, 75 miles from Tampa, according to the company. A final decision on a site has not yet been made for the company’s second micro-mill project, said to be destined for the US Southeast.

South Carolina is also currently under consideration, a Nucor spokeswoman told American Metal Market. “Nucor is continuing to evaluate locations in the southeastern US to build a second rebar micro-mill, with Florida and South Carolina currently under consideration,” she said.

“Similar to our Missouri decision, we are assessing areas where the rebar market is underserved and where our transportation and raw material cost advantages make the project economically viable,” she added, referring to Nucor’s decision to site its first rebar micro-mill in Sedalia, Missouri. “Along with market considerations, state and local incentives – such as the ones recently discussed in Florida – are an important factor in our site-selection process.”
