Severstal to boost pig iron output with new blast furnace

Russian steelmaker Severstal is planning to build a new blast furnace (BF). The new BF3, with capacity for 2.9 million tonnes per year, is scheduled to start operations in 2022, allowing Severstal to increase pig iron output to 14.6 million tpy from 11.7 million tpy.

“The construction and launch of BF3 will enable the company to reduce capex and avoid a shortage in pig iron, thereby securing Severstal’s supply of the raw material for years to come,” chief financial officer Alexey Kulichenko said.
