Tata Steel UK raises HRC capacity by 150,000 tpy

Tata Steel UK has increased its production capacity for hot-rolled coil by 150,000 tonnes per year by installing a new transfer bar cooling system at its strip mill in Port Talbot, South Wales. The new cooling system is part of a £14 million ($20 million) investment at the site, which will allow Tata to manufacture increased volumes of higher-value steels.

“We took the opportunity of a planned maintenance shutdown to upgrade several plant areas to further improve production of high-value steels and their delivery to customers,” Jon Ferriman, director of Tata Steel’s UK strip products division, said.

Other upgrades at Port Talbot include replacing a basic oxygen furnace steelmaking vessel, buying new cranes and installing dust-extraction hoods to minimize emissions.
