Rusal invests in new generation RA-550 pots

Russian aluminium producer Rusal has invested $30 million in launching its pilot operation of eight new generation RA-550 pots at its Sayanogorsk aluminium smelter. The project to develop the technology and launch the RA-550 pilot scheme has been implemented within three years.

The development by Rusal’s Technical Directorate is said to be highly energy efficient – the RA-550 consuming 10-15% less electricity versus pots of previous generations.

Professor Barry J. Welch, a leading expert in the technology of aluminium production, who was invited to independently appraise the RA-550 pilot scheme, said that the RA-550 project development period and its implementation, as well as operational maintenance, meet world standards. “As early as at this stage, the RA-550 technology can be recommended for implementation at new smelters with the amperage of 525 kA confirmed at the prototypes,” he added.

According to the designed capacity, a RA-550 pot will produce 4.21 tonnes of aluminium per day–almost twice the level of the RA-300 technology applied at Khakas and Boguchany aluminium smelters.
