AMM AEROSPACE MATERIALS CONFERENCE: Availability worries in titanium market

At least part of the titanium market is already concerned about availability, despite a leading analyst's assurance at AMM's 4th Annual Aerospace Materials Conference that a sharp rise in titanium demand over the next five years is unlikely to bring a serious shortfall.

Kuni Chen, senior director of global equity research for Bank of America Merrill Lynch in New York, told the Pittsburgh conference that titanium demand should double between now and 2015.

Chen said that with the next generation of wide-body planes—presumably including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A350 XWB—using five times more titanium than earlier generations, Merrill Lynch expects demand for titanium mill products to grow at an unprecedented annual pace of 12 percent from 2009 to 2015.....
