ATI layoffs hit 209 at Pa. stainless plant

Allegheny Technologies Inc. (ATI), Pittsburgh, has laid off 209 workers at its Midland, Pa., stainless steel production plant as part of a plan to reduce its work force by 20 percent in response to a lack of steel orders.
The layoffs at Midland are expected to last at least six months.
Details of the layoff plans emerged in a letter sent by the company to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. ATI had previously confirmed plans to temporarily lay off about 20 percent of the work force at its Allegheny Ludlum Corp. stainless and specialty steel operations (AMM, Nov. 4).....
