Hundreds in dark as China scrap export licenses expire

Hundreds of scrap companies are in the dark over the renewal of Chinese export licenses as authorities have still not confirmed all applications ahead of the end-of-year expiration of the old licenses.

Only between 900 and 1,000 scrap exporters globally have been confirmed by China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), and trade sources said hundreds are still awaiting notification on whether their applications were accepted.

AQSIQ issued more than 3,000 licenses to scrap companies globally when the program was introduced at the beginning of 2005. Those licenses expired Dec. 31.....
