Great Lakes shipments rise 11% in November

This year's mild autumn is contributing to a larger amount of cargo being carried on the Great Lakes.
U.S.-flag fleets moved 10.568 million net tons of dry-bulk cargo on the Great Lakes in November, an increase of 11 percent compared with the 9.53 million carried a year ago in November, according to the Lake Carriers' Association, Cleveland.
But, last year's harsh weather contributed to less cargo being carried. The association said storms and high winds kept the fleet at anchor more than 5,000 hours in November 2005. So, the better measure is the comparison with the month's five-year average, and in comparison November was up 1.8 percent over the average.....
