Inroads in e-collection make only a slight dent in discards

An East Coast electronics recycler anticipates record-breaking collections this year, but environmental officials warned that domestic collections netted only a fraction of computers, televisions and other electronic equipment headed for the scrap heap.

Envirocycle Inc. expects its collection of used electronics to exceed 2.5 million pounds in 2004. Last year, the Hallstead, Pa.,-based company collected 2.4 million pounds of used electronics for recycling during several dozen collection events and independent donations.....
