Automakers cautiously optimistic despite September sales volume dip

Automakers are cautiously upbeat despite a dip in overall sales volumes last month.
The unit sales volumes for the top seven U.S. automotive brands slipped 3.8 percent from August, and while the September volume was 29 percent higher than a year earlier that comparison is skewed because sales slumped in September 2009 in the immediate aftermath of the government's "Cash for Clunkers" incentive program.
For the first nine months of the year, unit sales volumes rose 9.8 percent from the same period last year, according to an AMM analysis.
Both General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. said they continue to anticipate light vehicle sales finishing the year with a seasonally adjusted annual rate of between 11.5 million and 12 million units despite the current slowdown in the nation's economic recovery.....
