Pacific Steel plans first export yard

Metals recycler Pacific Steel & Recycling Inc. plans to open a scrap export facility in the Pacific Northwest within a couple of months after getting clearance to take over an existing property lease. The site will be its first facility serving the export market.
The company has 38 branch offices or yards in Idaho, Montana, Nevada, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming, but none handling exports.
"We have been exploring it for a while now. This is our first export yard and will let us containerize materials, whereas in the past we had to find someone else and that can be inconsistent. We can handle our own material and it becomes easier once it is packaged to sell," Ken Halko, Pacific Steel's ferrous marketing manager, said.
Pacific Steel, which said the facility will create 35 permanent jobs, will relocate some existing personnel and equipment to the port operation. In addition to scrap metal, the port facility will export cardboard, Halko said.....
