Alcan cutting production at Tiwai Point

Rio Tinto Alcan will slice output at its majority owned Tiwai Point aluminum smelter in southern New Zealand by 5 percent amid soaring energy prices in the region, the Montreal-based company said Wednesday.

The cut, part of the company's plan to reduce power consumption at the 350,000-tonne-per-year smelter, will result in an output reduction of about 1,500 tonnes a month, or 18,000 tonnes per year.....
