As metal thefts rise in the UK, the police are stepping up efforts to find stolen material by raiding scrapyards. Here a scrap buyer tells Metal Bulletin's Barbara O'Donovan what it is like to be raided.
The scrap buyer says:
When we got raided, between ten and 20 police officers turned up. You don’t get any warning. They’ve got a list and they hit an area on one day.
They were looking for stolen metal, and checking to make sure we hadn’t got anyone working there that we shouldn’t have – dodgy labour and the like.
Sometimes environmental officers come too, but not the last time.
