Benteler to build EF at new Louisiana tube mill

CHICAGO — Benteler Steel/Tube GmbH plans to build an electric-arc furnace (EF) in the second phase of construction of its $900-million seamless oil country tubular goods (OCTG) mill in Louisiana.

The initial phase of the project—starting in 2013—would see the German unit of Salzburg, Austria-based Benteler Group build a hot-roll tube mill, a company spokeswoman told AMM via e-mail. But the company plans to build an EF “about five years later” at the same location, she said, enabling Benteler “to develop the highest-quality tubes using steel....
