S. Africa regulator sued for declining export permits

JOHANNESBURG — South Africa’s second-largest scrap merchant, SA Metal Group, took the country’s International Trade Administration Commission (Itac) to court last week in a bid to force the regulator to grant export permits it had refused under the new scrap export policy.

SA Metal’s urgent interdict application was heard in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria Nov. 13, Graham Barnett, the scrap merchant’s chief executive officer, confirmed to AMM sister publication Metal Bulletin.

"Unfortunately, the judge refused to hear the matter on an urgent basis, so it will be a while before it is decided," Barnett said.....
