W. Coast plate buyers see two distinct markets

LOS ANGELES Buyers of carbon steel plate on the West Coast said theyre increasingly doing business in different markets dominated either by rising domestic prices or by imports, with even recent increases leaving prices for foreign plate below U.S. product.
"There are two distinct markets now: the one that requires domestic steel, and the market that can be served by imports," one distributor said.
Other service center sources described the distinction as between spot market transaction deals and longer-term projects, some of which have domestic melt requirements and cant include imports.....
