CHICAGO — U.S. Steel Corp. chairman and chief executive officer John P. Surma is joining the board of directors of Ingersoll-Rand Plc effective Jan. 1.

The Dublin-based diversified industrial company said Monday that Surma would be a member of the board’s finance and audit committees.

Surma, who also is a member of the board of directors of Marathon Petroleum Corp., Findlay, Ohio, serves as vice chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations, treasurer of the board of directors of the World Steel Association, a member of the board of directors of the American Iron and Steel Institute and the board of directors of the National Safety Council, and is a member of the National Petroleum Council and the Business Council.
