COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Michael T. Rehwinkel, president and chief executive officer of Evraz Inc. North America, has been elected chairman of the American Iron and Steel Institute.

Rehwinkel, who succeeds Joseph A. Carrabba, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cleveland-based Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., will hold the position for a one-year term ending May 2014.

"Mike is a strong and articulate voice for the steel industry and we are honored to have him as our chairman for the next year," AISI president and chief executive officer Thomas J. Gibson said in a statement. "His advocacy for a comprehensive energy policy, that will boost job creation, has been tremendous for our industry."

In his role as chairman of the Washington-based trade group, Rehwinkel will lead the AISI’s advocacy efforts, particularly in pro-manufacturing public policies to enhance the competitiveness of the North American steel industry. Rehwinkel previously served as chairman of the AISI’s policy and planning committee.
