PITTSBURGH — Upstate Shredding LLC-Ben Weitsman & Son Inc. has passed a hurdle in its quest to install an auto shredder in New Castle, Pa.

The Owego, N.Y.-based metals recycler and processor has received a favorable recommendation from the local planning commission, which now goes before the city council for final approval. A meeting date for the vote has yet to be set, according to the city.

The recycler still needs to obtain required permits from the state Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Transportation, according to Anthony Paniccia, president and chief executive officer of Delta Engineers, Architects & Land Surveyors PC, Endwell, N.Y., which has overseen numerous Upstate Shredding initiatives. These permits will take a minimum of two months to process and can be worked through during the shredder installation, he told AMM.

The company announced earlier this month that it intends to commission a 3,000-horsepower Wendt Corp. shredder in the first quarter of 2014 capable of producing 100 tons per hour (amm.com, June 3).
